What Is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001, "Environmental management systems — Requirements with guidance for use," was first published in 1996 and most recently revised as ISO 14001:2015. A climate change amendment followed in 2024, and ISO published a full revised edition, ISO 14001:2026, on April 15, 2026. Organizations currently certified to the 2015 edition have a three-year transition window — 2015 certificates must be transitioned to the 2026 edition by May 2029 to remain valid.

Like ISO 45001 and ISO 9001, ISO 14001 shares a common high-level structure across ISO's management-system standards (now called the Harmonized Structure in the 2026 edition, formerly Annex SL). ISO 14001 does not certify that an organization has zero environmental impact — no standard can. The Structure: Clauses 4–10
